You’ve seen the promises: “Cut your energy bills in half!” “Save up to 40% on heating!” Before you sign a contract, it’s worth knowing what the research says. We’re a window company, and some of these findings isn’t what you’d expect us to admit.
Window companies sometimes advertise dramatic savings, and those numbers are technically possible only in extreme cases, like replacing 1950s single-pane windows with premium triple-pane units. The government’s own guidance is more modest. Natural Resources Canada guidance says homeowners who replace all their old windows and doors with ENERGY STAR qualified products typically save about 7 percent on energy bills, depending on the number replaced, their age, and how much air was leaking. Seven percent is a real, defensible number. It just isn’t 40.
The gap between old and new is largest when your windows are old. Research from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory found that modern double-glazed low-e windows cut heat loss by more than 50% compared to single glazing. The US Department of Energy estimates that a typical 2,376 sq ft home swapping single-pane windows for ENERGY STAR double-pane low-e windows saves about $366 per year on average. That’s an American average, so Calgary’s climate and gas prices will move the number. ZablockiroofingZablockiroofing
The reverse also holds. If your windows are already recent ENERGY STAR units, replacing them may save only a couple of percent more. Centennial Glass
In plain terms:
This is the finding most window ads leave out. An EPA analysis calculated mean and median payback for ENERGY STAR certified windows at 13 and 11 years, respectively, and that excluded installation costs. The US Department of Energy has acknowledged that high upfront costs and long payback times are why many homeowners keep their drafty old windows. OSTIDepartment of Energy
If a contractor tells you new windows will “pay for themselves” in a couple of years from energy savings alone, ask to see the math.
Energy savings are only part of the picture. Natural Resources Canada notes that energy-efficient windows also improve comfort, reduce outside noise, cut condensation in cold weather, and let through fewer UV rays that damage furniture and flooring. Encorewindows
For Calgary homeowners, that means:
Sometimes, and it depends on your house. The research points to a clear pattern:
