Ask around any Calgary homeowners’ forum and you’ll find the same story on repeat: someone got a quote, felt rushed, signed, and regretted it a few months later. Most of these situations trace back to a handful of warning signs that were visible from the very first sales call. Here’s what to watch for.
Some companies sell the job in-house, then hand it to a subcontracted install crew you never met or vetted. Ask directly: “Who will physically be installing my windows, and are they your employees or a sub-contractor?”
A legitimate quote doesn’t expire in 24 hours. If a discount is contingent on signing before the rep leaves your kitchen table, that’s pressure, not a deal.
You should be able to see cost per window, cost for labour, and cost for any add-ons (trim, disposal, permits) separately — not just one bundled number.
“A few weeks” isn’t a commitment. Ask for a production and install window in writing, and ask what happens if it slips.
If the warranty terms aren’t in the contract, they don’t exist. Get the manufacturer warranty and the labour/installation warranty spelled out separately.
It’s reasonable to want to see actual product samples and talk to someone in person before a five-figure purchase.
A company confident in its installs will happily point you to recent local jobs.
None of these red flags mean a company is dishonest — but a company that answers all seven questions clearly, without hesitation, is one worth taking seriously.
